Change lost: Corrosion of Roman copper alloy coins in changing and variable burial environments

چکیده
We studied the corrosion of Roman copper alloy coins that experienced alternations or progressive changes in their burial environment. used were still embedded soil a concretion selected from three professional excataved sites - Berlicum and Krommenie Netherlands Kempraten Switserland. mCT scanning neutron to record 3-D properties these prior (destructive) analyses. It proved possible tentatively identify coins. Microscope observations SEM-EDX analyses revealed complex processes, related changing environments. In horizon with fluctuating groundwater levels region upwelling reducing, iron-rich groundwater, gunmetal coin is essentially replaced by iron oxides while tin remains forms tin-oxide bands. Fluctuating redox conditions marine-influenced environments was shown transform copper-alloy into strongly laminated sulphides gypsum crystals, an outer surface copper-iron sulphides. Burial bronze charcoal rich layer probably caused temporary highly alkaline conditions. This most leach this coin, leaving behind tin-dominated mass, only limited amount (malachite) products remaining surrounding groundmass. all cases, processes tend be anisotropic, because cold-hammering during manufacture. Such on massive may produce features lead incorrect classification as subferrati, i.e. core. Our results help future distinguish corroded subferrati.

Ancient coins: cluster analysis applied to find a correlation between corrosion process and burial soil characteristics
Although it is well known that any material degrades faster when exposed to an aggressive environment as well as that "aggressive" cannot be univocally defined as depending also on the chemical-physical characteristics of material, few researches on the identification of the most significant parameters influencing the corrosion of metallic object are available.A series of ancient coins, coming ...
متن کاملDraft genome sequence of Pseudomonas psychrotolerans L19, isolated from copper alloy coins.
We report the draft genome sequence of Pseudomonas psychrotolerans strain L19, isolated from a European 50-cent copper alloy coin. Multiple genes potentially involved in copper resistance were identified; however, it is unknown if these copper ion resistance determinants contribute to prolonged survival of this strain on dry metallic copper.

INCONEL@ alloy 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that is used for its high strength, excellent fabricability and weldability, and outstanding corrosion resistance. The outstanding and versatile corrosion resistance of INCONEL alloy 625 under a wide range of temperatures and corrosive environments is the primary reason for its wide acceptance in chemical processing and other applications...
متن کاملLost memories and useless coins: revisiting the absentminded driver
The puzzle of the absentminded driver combines an unstable decision problem with a version of the Sleeping Beauty problem. Its analysis depends on the choice between “halfing” and “thirding” as well as that between “evidential” and “causal” decision theory. I show that all four combinations lead to interestingly different solutions, and draw some general lessons about the formulation of causal ...
